In the fifth instalment of Comfortnoise, «Cloud Atlas», NEW.COM («new-dot-com») delivers three bassheavy hybrids – or rather fabricants? – together with vocalist and songwriter JABEEN, and accompanied by a remix of no one else but BAKONGO (Livity Sound, Trule, Roska Kicks & Snares). It’s an as astonishing as original blend of percussive funky afrobeats with oriental flavours, including allusions to foundation dubstep, techno, and house music.
«Cloud Atlas» is a novel (2004, London: Hodder and Stoughton) written by David Mitchell, whose «An Orison of Sonmi~451» inspired the titles of this record: «I said, ‘Ascended fabricants need a Catechism: to teach them rights; to harness their anger; to channel their energies.’ I was the fabricant to write these words» (p. 362).
Originally, «Cloud Atlas» is a collection of ten short pieces for piano (1985-99; Sub Rosa 473) written by the Japanese composer Toshi Ichiyanagi, first husband of Yoko Ono.
