The field recording for “Institut” was recorded in the garden of the C.G. Jung Institut in Küsnacht, Switzerland, on a hot, cloudy summer day. The peaceful, yet lively nature of the garden was an ideal setting for a repose after a long walk along the adjacent lakeshore path skirting Zürichsee, which had been bustling with sail and motor boat traffic all morning long.

The field recording was then processed and edited in a makeshift home studio, and fleshed out in Ableton Live with a dub techno-inspired loop programmed in Reason, and processing recorded on-the-fly while performing the track. Institut was then brought to the Comfortnoise studio near downtown Zürich for additional treatments and recording. It was here that a Roland Space Echo RE-201 was employed for dubbing and effects on the blues harp performance by NEW.COM.

The subsequent versions of “Institut” were recorded using the original drum machine set and samples from the session in the Brooklyn, NY, home studio. These were performed as takes using a 4-track tape machine and KP-4 for delay and reverb processing. Additional synth and bass instrumentation was also included in the versions.

An effort was made to preserve continuity with past and present dub music: Stylistically, these tracks were recorded and processed in a manner that echoed production values and fidelity from early Jamaican dub records, such as the work of Augustus Pablo, Mad Professor and Tubby. Liberal use of filters, stereo delays and side-chaining lend a curious heaving – almost breathing – effect on the recordings, as hot and humid as the place that served as this work’s muse.

All tracks were compiled and mixdown occurred in Brooklyn, NY; subsequently, they were then re-mixed and mastered in Miami, FL.
