in roughly two thousand years from now, when civilization has been devastated by human insatiability, few people remain. their life is elementary and rough. they dearly miss lost knowledge. vaguely they sense that their language is somewhat twisted. its meaning must be painfully guessed. all their attempts to capture the true facts of their existence are in vain: the world is just secrets and enemies. the past feels like a grim, reverberant echo of loose imaginations.
riddley walker (1980) is an experimental science fiction novel by russell hoban. it inspired “riddleyspeak”, the eighth release of comfortnoise, written and produced by new.com: five not entirely familiar club and sound system tracks – breakbeat influenced, techno leaning, and bass-heavy.
“trufax” opens with a solemn, inscrutable atmosphere through a set of forward-moving, delayed kicks, a foggy fm bass, and light-footed percussion. with their sparse synth and acid hooklines, “seakerts” and “nemminy” keep a well calculated balance between techno and breaks. “eckowit” unfolds a mighty bassline underneath kicking breaks and urgent, siren-like sounds. “eckowit dub” finally is a hidden gem for those in the know. it relentlessly carves out the droning, undulating sub bass of the original and evokes a sinister mood saturated with oppressive queries.
“…thats why i finely come to writing all this down. thinking on what the idear of us myt be. thinking on that thing whats in us lorn and loan and oansome. […] walker is my name and i am the same. riddley walker. walking my riddels where ever theyve took me and walking them now on this paper the same…”
